Mr. W. D. Amaradewa
He was born on December 5, 1927 in Moratuwa. His musical career began at an early age. Amaradewa was educated at sri saddharmodaya mixed school. He received his secondary education from sri samangala vidyalaya, panadura. After that he entered Kaluthara vidyalaya and Balapitiya siddhartha vidyalaya.
He is best known as a respected artist who nurtured the field of sinhala music in North Indian Ragadhari music. He combines classical instruments such as sitar, tabla and harmonium with sinhala folk music and bharatha folk music.
He is known as the Great Gandharwa of the Hela. He got the name " Amaradewa" from prof Ediriweera Sarachcharandra.Accordingly, Ranmuthu duwa, Adata wediya heta hondai, sikuru tharuwa, gamperaliya, gatawarayo etc can be shown as films in which he has contributed under the music direction.
His other albums include Irata muwawen (1983), Kolomthota (1985), Wasantha geethaya (2000), Swarna vimaneta and Welithala athare.Amaradewa has received the Roman Magsaysay Award for Philippine (2001), The Deshamanya Award from the government of Sri Lanka, The Kala keerthi Award from the government of Sri Lanka and The Indian Padma shri. However, he was instrumental in the development of the music industry in Sri Lanka and passed away on November 3, 2016.
